Sand Creek Drop Structure Upstream of North Carefree Circle

Sand Creek Drop Structure Upstream of North Carefree Circle
City: Colorado Springs
Year: 2009
Project Description:

Kiowa Engineering prepared design plans for two drop structures on Sand Creek upstream of North Carefree Circle in Colorado Springs, Colorado.  Kiowa Engineering performed the hydraulic analysis and designed the drops and channel bank improvements.  The design featured grouted 48-inch boulders with sheet piling cut-off walls.  The crest and sill of the drops measured 85 feet and are capable of conveying the 100+year discharge of 4,500 cubic feet per second.  Kiowa also provided the 404 permitting services, erosion control plans and construction monitoring.

The photographs were taken in July 2009.  Both of the drops have experienced three bank full storm events since their completion in Spring 2009.  The native vegetation along the channel banks upstream and downstream of each of the drops was protected from disturbance.  The channel gradient used for the design was 0.5 percent.
