United States Olympic & Paralympic Museum
Kiowa Engineering worked as a part of the design team for the United States Olympic & Paralympic Museum located in the southern portion of downtown Colorado Springs situated at the base of Pikes Peak. Kiowa was part of the local Architect’s, AndersonMasonDale Architects, design team. The Museum was designed by New York Architect, Diller, Scofidio & Renfro (DS+R). The iconic building is destined to become a symbol of Colorado Springs. For Kiowa, the project involved site design including grading, drainage collection systems and utilities. The site is served by a regional underground detention basin, which is located just north of the site. Minor grading adjustments were required of the project to accommodate the underground facility along with the new City improvements to the streets surrounding the Museum.
The location of the Museum is on one of the oldest industrial sites in Colorado Springs and adjacent to railroad tracks running north-south through the City. The site was evaluated for environmental contamination prior to construction. To the west of the site, beyond the railroad tracks, lies America the Beautiful Park. The Museum site has unapparelled views to Pikes Peak. As part of the overall project, a pedestrian bridge connects America the Beautiful Park to the Museum over the railroad tracks. The pedestrian bridge was designed to compliment the Museum. The Museum itself is separated from a restaurant, the Flame Café, with a plaza between the Museum and the Café. The plaza connects to South Sierra Madre Street, east of the site with a raised walkway that appears to be an extension of the plaza. The Museum and the site were purposely designed to accommodate all visitors, with or without disabilities, with the intent of making it the most accessible museum, with continuous access throughout the Museum and the site itself. North of the Museum and Café the grounds have been developed as a garden with landscaping on trees native to the State of Colorado, plantings, rocks, and pathways throughout.
