Waste Management D&R Transfer Station
Kiowa Engineering worked as a part of the design team for the renovation and expansion of Waste Management’s D&R Transfer Station in Commerce City, Colorado. The existing transfer station building was replaced with a significantly larger 55,000 sf building including two drive through load out tunnels. The building was constructed on a solid waste landfill. Kiowa worked closely with the design team to prepare a design which would minimize ground settlement from the solid waste and account for future settlement.
Kiowa Engineering’s scope on the project involved site design including storm drainage system, water distribution system loop with fire hydrants, sanitary sewer collection system, vertical and horizontal layout of the tunnel ramps along with verification of proper clearances; grading of the site including the tunnel ramps, truck scales and tarping stations; erosion control design and preparation of Stormwater Management Plan; and coordination with Team on the layout of the site improvements. The drainage improvements included design of a storm sewer system to capture and convey site runoff to the existing stormwater quality and detention basin
